Helotes Economic Development Corporation understands that local businesses like yours may be temporarily impacted during construction projects, especially on business-oriented streets. These ongoing infrastructure improvements are key for the long-term health of the city’s economy and will enable a climate for business success once complete.

It is important to garner as much visibility for your business as possible during construction. VisitHelotes.com has a specific list of various directories that may be relevant to your business.

Eligibility

Business holds a current Certificate of Occupancy and is located within the corporate limits of the City of Helotes

Business must operate at least one storefront location within the Helotes city limit. Excludes: temporary locations, farmer’s market vendors, consignment vendors, etc.;

Businesses must be in good standing with the City of Helotes with respect to taxes, fees, or other financial obligations, and is in compliance with all applicable zoning, land use, and other ordinances;

Businesses located in a multi-tenant retail center are allowed 2 banners on a rotating basis. Additional requests for banners will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Applicants must also provide approval from the property manager/owner prior to approval.

Business must operate at least one storefront location within impacted area.

Business owner must provide a no litigation certificate.

Application Process

  1. Early Application submission is encouraged as proposals will be evaluated as received and early grant awards are likely.
  2. Applicant will apply online at www.helotesedc.com/construction-support and pay the temporary sign permit fee.
  3. Applicant should complete, sign, and submit the application
  4. HEDC staff will email notification to the applicant acknowledging receipt of their application.
  5. Applicants will be notified of the decision via email. If approved, HEDC staff will communicate the production timeframe for the street sign banner.
  6. Street banners can be installed by the applicant or by the designated sign company at an additional cost.
  7. Businesses located in a multi-tenant retail center are allowed 2 banners on a rotating basis.  Additional requests for banners will be handled on a case-by-case basis.  Applicants must also provide approval from the property manager/owner prior to approval.
  8. Business owners may have the street banner up for to 60 days per quarter or until road construction completion depending on the number of banner requests. Road construction is estimated to be completed in late 2024.

Will there be signs on the street to tell my customers that we’re open?

Various wayfinding signage will be installed to assist traffic flow and pedestrian travel and where feasible, to direct to alternative/overflow parking for the area.   

You can also get a street banner provided by the City of Helotes by filling the Street Banner Application. You may keep the street banner up until road construction is complete.

When will the construction around my business end?

Construction is estimated to finish in May 2024 but is subject to change. For updated timelines and further information, please contact the City of Helotes. 

How do I communicate to my customers that we’re open for business?

There are digital toolkits available for download that businesses can use to help share with their clients, subscribers and followers to inform them they are still open for business during construction. The toolkit includes downloadable window signs and graphics for web and social media for your use. While in-person visits are reduced, what are some alternative or supplemental revenue streams I should consider for my business?

Businesses can consider the following tactics for supplemental revenue streams:  

  • Establish e-commerce or online ordering 
  • Offer delivery or work with a delivery service platform 
  • Encourage gift card purchases 
  • Promote shop local 
  • Ask for online reviews 
  • Offer virtual appointments or shopping experiences, and more.
